The divorce conversation you had with your spouse was the beginning of making crucial decisions. And one of them is where you will live. There are several living arrangements possible for divorcing spouses.

Below are three you can consider:

Stay in the family home

You and your soon-to-be ex-spouse can agree to remain in the family home, living in separate spaces. This can help you save money since you won’t need to deal with moving costs immediately. Also, if you have kids, this can be a great option for helping them transition into their new life.

However, living together can lead to conflicts, especially if you don’t set boundaries. You need to agree on how you will use communal spaces, spend time with the kids and share expenses now that you are living like roommates. You should also minimize communication and respect each other’s personal spaces.

Rent a temporary space

One of you can rent a temporary apartment to use until the divorce is finalized. This may not be the time to purchase a new home, seeing that you have other financial decisions to make. Besides, a new home may be considered a marital asset during property division.

Use rental sites or work with a real estate agent to find a short-term rental, preferably a furnished apartment. If you have kids, consider a rental near the family home. This option is costlier than remaining in the family home, but it gives you an emotional space.

Live with loved ones

If possible, one of you can move in with loved ones. This is a cost-effective solution that provides companionship and a supportive environment.

Various factors come into play when deciding where to live during a divorce. These include children’s needs, finances and safety. Get more information about your available options to make an informed choice.
